Delegative Democracy Simulation

 

Overview:

 

Carletonia is a middle-income South American country that successfully engineered a transition to democracy from seven years of military rule and is preparing to elect its second civilian government. The economy, however, is in shambles. Growth rates have plummeted as inflation has soared to hyper-inflationary levels. The first civilian government of Arnaldo Roldán pursued a heterodox stabilization program that initially received the support of the population but lost that support when the plan failed to control for inflation and generate new jobs. Poverty worsened during this period as unemployment and inflation forced down disposable incomes.

 

Carletonia=s political system has been dominated by two traditional parties since the end of WWII: the Colorados and the Blancos. Both have been center-right forces in a political spectrum that also includes a Communist Party, a Social Democratic Party, and several other marginal organizations. While Roldán was elected on the Colorado ticket, his failed government caused many to question whether either of the traditional parties had solutions to Carletonia=s immense economic and social problems. New political actors have emerged to take the center-stage in Carletonia. In addition to the candidates of the two traditional parties, the slate of candidates includes a number of maverick upstarts from opposition parties and a former member of the military who tried to oust Roldán in a thwarted coup attempt one year after the transition to democracy. Carletonia faces a major test of its democracy and you, the people of Carletonia, must make a crucial decision. Can you trust any of the candidates that seek your vote? Who are they? What do they want? Will their ideas make Carletonia a beacon of successful reform or a victim of reform gone awry?
